Item Description:
This is a traditional vintage wedding basket. This style of basket is used in many Navajo ceremonies, especially in the wedding ceremony. This basket measures 14" across and is approximately 3" deep. It has a brain tanned deer hide knot at the center and is in great vintage condition.
The wedding basket has a very rich symbolic meaning. The center of the basket represents the beginning of this world and where the Navajo people emerged from a reed. The white part around the center is the earth, the black symbolizes the sacred mountains. Above them are clouds, the white and black ones represent the making of rain. The red between the sacred mountains and the rain clouds represents birth and family. The outer rim of the basket has a herringbone stitch which comes to a finish in line with the start at the center of the basket. A sipapu or opening extends from the center of the basket to the finish at the rim. During ceremonies this opening will be pointed towards the east and when the basket is hung on the wall it will be pointing upwards.
