HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Hawaii News Now First Alert Weather team has declared that this Friday is now a FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY. Strong trade winds are expected to impact the state, and some sustained wind speeds could reach as strong as 20-30 miles per hour on Thursday afternoon and Friday. Wind gusts could climb even higher, potentially reaching 40 miles per hour.
Winds will strengthen today as high pressure builds to the north of the state. Stronger trades will last into the weekend. Moisture will continue riding along the trade winds on Thursday, which could lead to windward and mauka showers.
Drier air will also approach the state on Friday, leading to an elevated fire danger concern with the gusty winds. The highest fire danger threat will be during the daytime on Friday.
A WIND ADVISORY is currently in place for portions of the Big Island, Maui, Lanai, Kahoolawe, and Molokai. The NWS is forecasting for easterly winds between 20-30 miles per hour and even stronger wind gusts. This alert will last until 6 PM Thursday and may be extended in time.
A HIGH SURF ADVISORY is also in effect for the north and west-facing shores of Kauai, Oahu, and Molokai. The north-facing shores of Maui are also included in this advisory. Large surf on north-facing shores could climb above 20 feet. The alert will last until 6 PM on Thursday.
